Elite Vs Knights Blues - May 6, 2006

Player of the Week

Elite CC beats Knights Blues by 55 runs. Saravanan Krishnans 5-21 was the highlight of the Elites bowling attack which was ably supported by Sudhir, Jawahar, Ramesh and Krishna’s batting.
Season 2006, Elite Cricket club players were all excited to have Prakash Arumugam as Captain and Sudhir Kovur as Vice Captain of the team.
The match against Kights Blues was the first match of the season on Saturday, May 6, 2006. Prakash won the toss and immediately decided that Elite team will bat first. The goal was to play all 30 overs.
Debut players: Srinivas, Jawahar and Harsha
First Innings: Elite CC batting
Sudhir and Srinivas walked in as openers, the two played nicely, frustrating the opening bowlers, the score was coming in at a slower but steady pace. Srivinivas got bowled to a beauty from Charlie. Jawahar, the new addition to the Elite Club walked in to bat his first league cricket match in Iowa. He played very sensibly taking singles when ever he could. Luck favored him as Charlie dropped an easy popup from him; he then capitalized this chance making some good shots. The weather and some quick running between the wickets took good toll of him and he was run out by a fine direct throw from Charlie after scoring 17 valuable runs. Krishna walked in with his elegant walking style and played some splendid strokes which unfortunately could not cross the fence due to tall grass. He then tried lofting the ball and was nicely caught at the boundary line for 10. The score during the drinks break (after 15 0vers) was a meager 56, but Elite had lots of wickets in hand and the break gave much needed energy for the batsmen and the runs came at regular intervals, Sudhir started to hit the balls very nicely but was caught at the boundary while trying to clear the boundary for 20 valuable runs. The wickets started to fall in short intervals as the need for more runs had put pressure on the batsmen. Prakash was beautifully bowled by an in-cutter from Sathish and Srikant was also bowled for a very low score. Then Ramesh and Bharath steadied the innings with some fine flicks and beautiful back –to-back fours by Ramesh off Sathish. Ramesh was run out for 13; Bharath was run out for 9. Kumsi, Saravanan and Harsha also contributed with their wits and quick running between the wickets to push the score. At the end of 30 overs Elite had scored 128 runs (scoring 74 runs after the break) and the team ended up playing all the 30 overs. The downside of the first innings was 3 run outs.
Second Innings: Knights Blues batting:
Sathish and Rajesh opened the innings, just as the two were steadying their ship chasing 129 to win; Saravanan came in and took off Sathish’s middle stumps with a beauty of an in-swinger. Then Girish walked in and seemed to be threatening the bowlers with some good front foot strokes, but he did not last for long as he as beautifully caught by Kumsi at Long-off who ran 10-15 yards to his left to take the flat shot off Sudhir’s bowling. Srikant bowled wonderfully with back-to-back maidens applying brakes to the runs and putting pressure to the batsmen. Rajesh was bowled cheaply. Anand Nadar was the victim of Krishna’s rocket delivery that knocked off his off-stump 10 feet away from the crease. Charlie walked in and started his inning with a sweet four and continued to shower shots everywhere around the ground along with Gau. Just as the morale of the Elite was going down, Saravanan came back and took off the bails of Charlie with a swirling delivery. By then Charlie had scored 28 valuable runs for the Blues. Saravanan then took off Gau’s stumps with another in-swinger thus ripping off the Blues top order like a zipper. The Blues tail ender’s could not get the runs going as there were some run out mishaps that sealed a comfortable victory for Elites. The highlights of this inning were 5-21 by Saravanan (a wicket per over) and some good knocks by Charlie (highest scorer of the day). Srinivas did a good job of keeping behind the wickets during his debut match with Elite. Defending a total of 128 was not easy, but solid bowling and fielding helped the Elites to easily defend this score. Chandru and Ganesh encouraged the team from the sidelines and helped the team by providing drinks and tips at regular intervals. Elite are off to a good start with a winning note.
